Healthy Snacks

Make healthy snacking part of your everyday routine. It helps to have ideas for snacks in advance so when hunger hits your only choice isn’t an unhealthy snack like chips or a candy bar. It pays to prepare healthy snacks in advance. That way you can choose ingredients that are good for you. Many of these ideas also make a good choice for a light lunch.

Small fruits like fresh or frozen blueberries, grapes or cherries make excellent healthy snacks.
Oranges are a perfect snack. They are easy to take with you, taste great and are high in vitamin C, folic acid and fiber.

Everyone has heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Try cutting your apple into slices and topping with a thin spreading of peanut butter or fat-free cream cheese.

Grape or cherry tomatoes are perfect for snacking or salads. They also add fiber to your diet.

Cut up raw vegetables (carrots, celery, bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower) in advance and keep them in small plastic bags in your fridge. Grab a few when you are hungry. If you need a dip try a low-fat salad dressing like Ranch, Thousand Island or Creamy Italian or try plain fat-free yogurt with your favorite spices added.

I also like to cut up fruits like melons and dip them in a fruit flavored yogurt. A small amount of sugar-free drink mix added to the yogurt gives it an extra “kick”.

A quick and nutritious snack can be made by spreading peanut butter on a celery stick and sprinkling a few raisins on top. Or you can fill the celery stick with fat-free cream cheese.

A rice cake, plain or topped with a small amount of peanut butter, honey, tuna salad or refried beans or whole grain crackers topped with a slice of tomato, a slice of low skim mozzarella cheese or salsa makes a healthy snack or light lunch.

Low-fat or fat-free yogurt makes a good snack. You can also add fresh or frozen fruit or low-fat granola to the yogurt.

Nuts are high in calories but they are also good for you. A small handful of peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds or soy nuts makes a good afternoon snack.

Popcorn sprinkled with parmesan cheese, chili powder, garlic powder or onion powder makes an excellent evening snack.

Don’t forget to drink a glass of water with your snack. It is not only good for you; it will help you feel less hungry.
